[singlepic=47,135,95,left]While technically this is a spiritual successor to Enemy Territory, it feels very different. You can’t really compare it to any one single game, as it really borrows from quite a few. While it takes good ideas and makes them better, it also creates its own ideas. In the end, the combination of all the gameplay elements just works. The balance is right, and even the support roles don’t feel boring or trivial. And since all the classes are powerful in infantry combat, you’re not going to get certain classes neglected just due to bad weaponry (I’m looking at you, Battlefield).

[singlepic=46,135,95,right]You’ve got some sharp looking graphics, good technology to back it up, a good physics system (for multiplayer), solid network performance, huge battlefields, a wide variety of classes, a focus front line, incredible map design, and back all this up with just fun shooter gameplay – you’ve got yourself a great game. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars isn’t for everyone, but if this sort of interaction and teamwork sounds fun, this could be your multiplayer shooter fix going into 2008.

  1. Good review Matt. I just bought the game yesterday, but I do feel it opening itself to me as I play more. Also, one influence I see in this game is that of Tribes. The deployables and such really have me getting that vibe.

  2. @SlapBone – I definitely agree on the Tribes parallel! I actually didn’t think of that game (which was actually my first online shooter) when writing this, but it’s a pretty fair comparison. This isn’t quite as complex as some of Tribes’ elements were, as ETQW feels far more streamlined and polished. And thanks for the comment.
